The Development of Ethics: A Historical and Critical Study (Oxford University Press, 2007). In this historical and critical study of the development of moral philosophy over two thousand years, Irwin explores the thinking and ideas of Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and thinkers from all the centuries that follow—from ancient Greece to the Reformation. He introduces each thinker with substantial quotations and interprets and evaluates their philosophies in discussions of their work. The book is the first of three volumes that will examine the history of ethics in the Socratic tradition up to the twentieth century.
