Mobility and Inequality (Stanford University Press, 2006). This volume of research on social and economic mobility probes the effects of in-equality on mobility in industrial societies. The experts examine the range of mobility patterns in recent decades, the mechanisms that generate mobility, and the role of educational institutions in constraining and enabling mobility. They present original research and conceptual arguments as approaches to questions such as these: How often do working-class children obtain college degrees? How frequently do the children of doctors and lawyers fail to enter high-status careers after schooling? As inequalities of wealth and income have increased over the last 30 years, have patterns of generational mobility changed?
