Making Human Beings Human: Bioecological Perspectives on Human Development (Sage Publications, 2005). This collection of 23 articles traces the historical development of Bronfenbrenner’s groundbreaking bioecological model of human development, detailing how it can be applied via programs and policies. The articles, written mostly by Bronfenbrenner over the course of six decades, is a culminating work and statement that he hopes will shape the future of his field. Bronfenbrenner, the cofounder of the federal Head Start program, is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading scholars in developmental psychology, childrearing, and human ecology—the discipline he created. His model of the ecology of human development acknowledges that humans do not develop in isolation, but in relation to their family and home, school, community, and society.
