   The Free Fantasia and the Musical Picturesque (Cambridge University Press, 2001). Richards explores the late-eighteenth-century free fantasia and its relationship to the aesthetics of landscape and the picturesque. She examines the ways in which musical fantasy relied on concepts borrowed from the art of the landscape garden, for example. She shows how the surprising disjunction of musical fantasies—improvisations and their composed imitations—were legitimated and justified via the aesthetics of the picturesque.
