   Tuition Rising: Why College Costs So Much (Harvard University Press, 2000). Ehrenberg explores reasons for rising tuition costs at select private colleges and universities in the U.S. Competing for the best students and faculty, shared governance (trustees, administrators, and faculty), and the impact of college rankings such as the U.S. News and World Report are among the reasons he cites. Ehrenberg offers suggestions such as the same fiscal discipline imposed on public institutions, shared resources among academic institutions, and financial aid for academically qualified students who otherwise could not attend the select institutions.
